Updated: May 23

The USPS has announced a postage rate increase, which is set for Sunday, January 21, 2024.

Unlike last year, when we were able to avoid increases in costs by switching to the Post Office’s new Ground Advantage option or using the Flat Rate packaging options that didn’t see big increases, this increase will be felt by with your eCommerce fulfillment using the USPS for shipping.

Here are some of the basics:

  • The First-Class Stamps will increase from $0.66 to $0.68.

  • The postcard rate is increasing to $0.53.

  • Rates for First-Class large letters are also increasing 3%.

  • Ground Advantage rates are increasing by 5.4%.

  • Priority Mail rates are increasing by 5.7%.

  • Priority Express Mail rates are increasing 5.9%.

  • Media Mail rates are increasing 4.2.

  • Flat Rate packaging prices are also increasing. For example, the cost at the Post Office for a Medium Flat Rate Padded envelope is going from $17.10 to $18.40.

  • Marketing Mail is also seeing an increase of 1.333% for letters and 3.966% for large letters (flats).

These postage rate increases are always an excellent time to take a look at how you are shipping your orders and assess what other options are available. I recently spoke with a small Shopify eCommerce company. They were shipping all of their product in poly mailers and it was generally costing them $10 to $14 per order to ship. We took a look at their product and with our recommendations, they were able to switch to a Flat Rate option that brought their shipping costs under $10 an order.
